Honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.: The History and Legacy of San Antonio’s MLK March

by Kristen Smith, Realtor

San Antonio is home to the largest Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. March in the United States, attracting over 300,000 participants each year. This annual event is not only a celebration of Dr. King’s legacy but also a testament to the city’s commitment to civil rights and community unity. Let’s explore the history behind this historic march and how you can take part this year.

The History of the San Antonio MLK March

The San Antonio MLK March began in 1968, initiated by Rev. Dr. Raymond Callies. At the time, Dr. Callies was advocating for improved infrastructure in the city’s Eastside neighborhoods while promoting Dr. King’s message of equality and nonviolence.

In 1986, the City of San Antonio established the MLK Commission, further strengthening the march’s impact and purpose. Over the years, the event has welcomed notable civil rights icons such as Rosa Parks and the Freedom Riders, adding to its significance as a cornerstone of the city’s cultural and historical identity.

The Mission Behind the March

The San Antonio MLK March and the MLK Commission aim to uphold four core principles:

  1. Human Equality: Advocating for equal rights for all people.
  2. Nonviolence: Promoting peaceful solutions to conflicts and injustices.
  3. Racial Harmony: Fostering understanding and acceptance across diverse communities.
  4. Respect and Goodwill: Encouraging mutual respect and collaboration within the community.
